ID check

Himalayan birch is a deciduous tree which reaches up to 20 m tall.

The bark is very shiny, white and papery (see photo).

Male and female catkins are produced on the same tree (monoecious) in May to July.

The leaves are larger than those of either Silver birch (Betula pendula) or Downy birch (Betula pubescens) and are not triangular.

  • The bark is also used for packaging.

  • The wood is used for bridge building. The leaves can be used as fodder for animals.
