Germinating seeds in small pots

Resource

This activity in a great way to introduce the scientific concept of germination, allowing children to observe the roots and shoots they would not normally be able to see when the plants are grown in their natural environment. Pupils will learn about how the root appears first in germination, not something they would see if the seed was planted in soil.

Pupils will prepare seeds for germination and observe the process over a short period of time using simple equipment and can then use units of measure to compare seed germination. An ideal activity to consolidate numeracy skills.

Instead of using small pots, you could use Petri dishes to grow the seedlings. Check out this resource here.
