In the first of a new series, we've been asking SAPS Associates to pick a particular plant science resource that they'd recommend the rest of the teaching community.
Julia Anderson, Curriculum Leader in Biology, West Thames College, a further education college in London, is a big fan of our cauliflower cloning practical. We asked her to tell us more. (Julia tweets to her students at @BioLecturer.)
"I used the SAPS cauliflower plant totipotency protocol with my AS Biology students, though it would certainly be appropriate to BTEC and HND students too. The protocol was straightforward, and the students were able to get on with it almost unaided. Within three weeks some cells were photosynthesising, and a month later we had tiny cauliflower leaves and a purple flower! The results were so striking that other classes, teachers and the lab technicians were checking back on a daily basis to see whether there was any further growth. SAPS themselves were fantastically supportive when my lab technician was having difficulties tracking down plain agar, and they even e-mailed me when they saw me chatting on Twitter to another teacher about the protocol. I cannot wait to use it again this year." Here is the original 'Cauliflower Cloning' resource and here is an alternative version introducing a STEM careers element. If you'd like to recommend a SAPS resource that you and your class have particularly appreciated, send a mail at This email address is being protected from spambots.
